Bornholm electricity customers may end up with huge bills for connecting to Energiø Bornholm

Trefor El-net Øst warns that electricity consumers on the island risk paying DKK 200 million for grid connection

Bornholm electricity customers risk getting a bill of 200 million DKK when the local electricity grid is to be connected to Energiø Bornholm. This is shown by calculations from Trefor El-net Øst, which fears that the bill will be passed on to consumers. The connection will be made at Sose on South Bornholm, where the electricity from the offshore wind turbines comes ashore. The large expense covers new cable connections and upgrades to the Bornholm 60 kilovolt grid, so that it can be connected to Energinet's facilities. This is reported by TV2 Bornholm.

According to current regulations, only local customers under the 60 kilovolt grid have to pay for this type of grid expansion. Thus, the Bornholm grid company will initially finance the work, but pass the cost on to the approximately 30,000 electricity customers on the island. Trefor El-net Øst expects to pay off the investment over 40 years, which means that electricity customers will have to pay several hundred kroner extra per year for many years.

- I don't think it's fair. The problem is just that, as the rules currently stand, only the customers below the 60 kilovolt grid in the relevant location will pay that bill, says Charles Nielsen, chairman of the board of Trefor El-net Øst.

Mayor of Bornholm Jacob Trøst (K) has sent a letter to Minister Lars Aagaard (M) and argues that the state should cover the cost, as the project also benefits the rest of Denmark and Germany. According to the mayor, the ministry expects the case to be resolved no later than the first quarter of 2026. The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities states that negotiations are underway with Germany on a new cost sharing. A possible local connection will be assessed when there is political clarification.
