Bornholm's Offshore Wind sees new opportunity after government's change of course

Bornholms Havvind hopes that the government's decision to put Energiø Bornholm on hold can pave the way for the establishment of a publicly owned offshore wind farm southeast of Nexø. The community has so far had their project rejected on the grounds that it would constitute illegal state aid. The rejection was based on the fact that energy companies have previously paid for the right to exploit the seabed. But after the government put three offshore wind farms in the North Sea out to tender without receiving a single bid, Bornholms Havvind is questioning this reasoning. This is reported in Bornholms Tidende.

- The government expected that offshore wind would have become such a good business by now that project developers would be willing to pay for the right to build offshore wind farms. It turned out that they were not. This willingness to pay was nevertheless central to the argument in the draft rejection of our application received just the month before, said representative Peter Andreas Nielsen, according to local media, at the association's general meeting held this week.

The Citizens' Energy Community finds it particularly interesting that the government has also opened up possible state support for project developers. They therefore hope that the Danish Energy Agency will reassess their application. The final decision from the state is expected soon.
