Skagen Port aims green with solar cells and electrification

Solar cells, sustainability and local anchoring are already part of the port, which is working towards being CO2-neutral and emission-free by 2030.

Sustainability is part of Skagen, and where other ports may seem like closed land to the city behind, it is completely different in Skagen Port.

- Sustainability also means social sustainability for us. We also think about that in relation to the city. There is access as far as possible. For example, you can drive out to the outermost pier, and it is never closed, says CEO Willy B. Hansen.

This is something that the residents and the many tourists in Skagen welcome.

- The quays are closed, but where possible, they are open. This is something we get good feedback on, explains the port director.

Electrification

Shore power plants are also part of the future plans.

- Another part for us is electrification as a shore power plant. Electrification is coming, and in a few years we will be able to offer shore power systems for a drilling rig like the Noble Resilient, which is now in the port. When we can supply power to such a drilling rig, it also opens up opportunities for much larger ships, he says, mentioning other advantages of such large shore power systems:

- It will also reduce both CO2 emissions, particle emissions into the air and noise.

The Port of Skagen's new port office, which was inaugurated in October 2023, is also part of the sustainability plans.

- There are solar cells on the roof of our new domicile here, and we have heat pumps. In addition, we have solar cells on three building complexes today. We will also end up having five electric cars this year, explains Willy B. Hansen about the car fleet for the 24 employees.

The sustainability goal is only six years away, and it is high.

- The goal is to be CO2-neutral and emission-free in 2030, it says.

Green fuels

The large fishing industry's fuel needs are also in focus, but there is no mention yet of methanol, ammonia or even hydrogen.

- We are looking at the capacity for green fuels for the fishing industry. Here it is biodiesel now in the first place, says Willy B. Hansen.

The fishing industry already contributes green energy with its waste.

- The wastewater from the fishing industry is already used in biogas plants, where the gas is upgraded and ends up as natural gas or is used elsewhere in the industry, he explains.

However, there is a great desire for more sustainability, which the port director has.

- We need larger cables for power supply to FF Skagen, so that the company can also electrify. As far as I know, the factory is one of the larger CO2 emitters in Denmark, says Willy B. Hansen.

In 2022, the company stated that it would use 15 million cubic meters of gas per year in its production. It could be replaced by electricity with a smaller discharge if there was cable capacity to Skagen.
