Vogue's influential editor-in-chief steps down after 37 years
Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is stepping down from her position after decades at the helm of the magazine.
This is reported by CNN, which received confirmation from the magazine's publisher, Condé Nast, on Thursday.
Wintour, who began as editor-in-chief in 1988, reportedly told employees on Thursday.
However, Wintour will continue in a position as global head of content at Condé Nast, just as she will remain global editorial director at Vogue.
Vogue is an international fashion and lifestyle magazine that was founded in 1892 and is published in several different countries.
Anna Wintour has not immediately commented on the resignation. It has also not been announced who will be her successor.
CNN writes that 75-year-old Anna Wintour reinvented Vogue as editor-in-chief, and that she made countless editorial decisions that her predecessors would have seen as unthinkable.
In her first issue, it was the Israeli model Michaela Bercu who was on the cover wearing, among other things, a pair of jeans. According to CNN, it was the first time that the magazine had a pair of jeans on the cover.
In 1992, a man - in the form of the American actor Richard Gere - was put on the cover of Vogue for the first time. Here he was portrayed together with his then wife, supermodel Cindy Crawford.
Anna Wintour is also known for playing a central role in organizing the charity event Met Gala in New York City.
The Met Gala takes place every year in May and marks the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual fashion exhibition and is also known for having big international names on the guest list.
On the silver screen, there has been speculation about whether one of the characters in the film "The Devil Wears Prada" is based on Wintour. It is her former assistant Lauren Weisberger, who is the author of the book on which the film is based.
In the film, the character Andrea Sachs becomes an assistant to the fearsome editor-in-chief Miranda Priestley at Runway magazine.
Last year, Anna Wintour attended a performance of a musical version of the film.
In that regard, she told the BBC that it is "up to the audience and the people I work with to decide whether there are any similarities between me and Miranda Priestly".
