BBC wants to raise more money with payment system in the US
If you want unlimited access to news from the British media outlet BBC from the US, you will have to pay in the future.
The BBC, which is mainly financed by British licensees, is introducing a subscription for the full service.
It costs 50 US dollars annually or 8.99 dollars per month. This corresponds to almost 320 kroner or almost 60 kroner, respectively.
For that amount, Americans get "unlimited access" to the BBC's news articles, longer articles and the BBC News television channel, according to a statement from the British media outlet.
If you as an American do not pay, you will still have access to certain articles. This applies to selected global "breaking" stories, it says.
- The BBC hopes that the offer will help fund the BBC's services, the press release says.
Des Freedman, a professor of media at the University of London, tells the AFP news agency that the BBC is "desperate to increase its income".
According to him, these are increasingly "tough times for the BBC in light of the challenges from streaming rivals and a lack of willingness from the government" to increase the license fee.
Damian Tambini from the London School of Economics says that the media has started with the payment system in the US, because it is so popular there.
BBC.com has 139 million visitors each month globally. Of these, almost 60 million come from the United States.
Danes can use the BBC's website as before.
- There will be no changes for the BBC's British audience or for those elsewhere in the world, the British media writes in a press release.
