FREDERIKSHAVN: At the end of April, the board of Frederikshavn Port announced that it no longer believed that the port could continue to be operated as a municipal self-governing port due to a debt of approximately DKK 1.7 billion and a liquidity shortage in the coming years of over DKK 100 million.

Therefore, the municipality's mayor Birgit S. Hansen (S) announced at the time that the municipality would take over the operation of the port with effect from May 15. However, the decision still lacked final approval from the city council. That approval came on Wednesday evening at an extraordinary city council meeting. Here, a majority of 28 out of 29 members voted in favor of the takeover. This is reported by TV2 Nord.

The large majority welcomes the mayor, who calls the takeover "a serious task". She states that the immediate bills for 2024, which must be paid, will be taken out of the municipality's savings. However, the municipality is also looking ahead and hopes in the long term to create a profitable operation.

- We are working in parallel to ensure that we can also get out of this again, so that the port can become independent - what is called a commercial port - and start making some money again. Some call it an exit strategy, and we are already working on that from now on, says the mayor.
