Newly appointed director of crisis-hit Frederikshavn Port: It looks much worse than we thought

The port recently had to borrow to continue normal operations.

FREDERIKSHAVN: There are dark clouds over the Port of Frederikshavn, the port was recently granted two new guarantees for loans totaling 35 million DKK. Some of the funds were necessary to ensure the port's continued operation, and thus avoid the municipality having to take over the operation of the port, which is today a municipal self-governing port.

But despite the new funds, the situation is still very serious. This is emphasized by Poul Knudsgaard, who joined the board in November and later agreed to temporarily be director when the previous director Mikkel Seedorf Sørensen and deputy director of operations Kim Nielsen were fired in January. According to the interim director, the situation "looks much worse than we thought," he tells Nordjyske.

- It is of course completely wrong that we have to borrow to pay for the regular operations of the port, says Poul Knudsgaard.

The port currently has a debt of approximately DKK 1.5 billion and for 2023 the turnover was approximately DKK 75 million. The high debt is due, among other things, to a major port expansion and a new quay facility, which paved the way for the scrap company M.A.R.S. According to Poul Knudsgaard, it is the new management's assessment that several companies at the port pay too little compared to the market rent. Whether this is also the case for M.A.R.S. is not known, as it is a trade secret what the company pays.
