Repair work on the Estlink 2 submarine power cable, which was damaged on December 25 last year, will begin in May.  Finnish grid operator Fingrid wrote in a press release on Wednesday.  The cable runs between Finland and Estonia. It is expected to be fully repaired and put back into service on July 15.

- Carrying out such extensive repair work has required detailed planning, says Fingrid unit manager Kimmo Nepola in the press release.

The unit manager adds that the repair work has been planned and prepared since January.  The same day that Estlink 2 was damaged, damage also occurred to other cables.  Subsequently, a ship named "Eagle S" was seized, and a number of authorities participated in the investigation of the ship.

The ship was suspected of being behind the damage by dragging its anchor along the seabed. Emergency personnel from the police emergency unit and the Finnish border authority descended from a helicopter and seized the ship, the Finnish news agency Yle reported.

However, in early March, the "Eagle S" was allowed to continue sailing, as the first phase of the preliminary investigation was completed, the local media reported. The ship had a crew of 24 people. Eight of them are suspected of offenses such as gross sabotage.

Three people are still subject to a travel ban and are not allowed to leave Finland.
