Forecast: What energy prices will be like

Families with gas boilers will be hit hard by high energy prices in 2022, according to calculations from Danske Bank.

The high energy prices will have an impact on several Danish families, who in 2022 are expected to have around DKK 200 less available per month.

This is shown by a forecast from Danske Bank. These are calculations that the bank has made for their model family, which corresponds to a typical Danish family with two adults and two small children. The decrease in the amount available is due to "predominantly high energy prices", writes Danske Bank.

The model family heats their home with a gas boiler, like approximately 400,000 other households. Although the prices of gas and electricity have fallen slightly after skyrocketing over Christmas, the prices are still higher than normal. Especially for gas.

Therefore, the total additional heating bill is expected to land at DKK 4,200 for the whole of 2022 - equivalent to DKK 350 per month.

- If the model family had heated themselves with district heating - which on average has not increased in price, although it has in some places in the country - they would have had the prospect of a smaller increase in their disposable income, writes private economist at Danske Bank Louise Aggerstrøm Hansen in the forecast.

The decrease in disposable income comes despite expectations of wage increases of 3.2 percent this year. This will provide a boost to incomes.

However, general prices have also increased, so that while the increase in real wages, which is an expression of how much you can buy for your salary, as prices rise, increased by almost 1 percent. in 2021, it will fall to just under 0.8 percent in 2022. Danske Bank expects it to rise to approximately 2 percent in 2023.

Extraordinarily high uncertainty about electricity prices

Electricity prices rose in December 2021 to almost ten times the price in December 2020, but at the beginning of 2022 the price has fallen.

Louise Agerstrøm Hansen therefore expects the extra bill to be limited compared to last year. However, it goes without saying that there is "extraordinarily high uncertainty" about electricity prices, which is why they could quickly rise again.

Next year - in 2023 - energy prices are expected to settle down at a higher level than before the current price increases began. At the same time, a significant increase in income is expected.

The two things combined mean that Danske Bank's model family can look forward to getting almost DKK 1,500 more in their hands.

The model family drives a petrol car, and they will therefore be affected by increases in the owner's tax this year and next year. But it is a "relatively modest increase", says the forecast.
