- It is obvious to everyone that the yet-to-be-opened Nordstream 2 is to blame for the energy price crisis, says Professor Brian Vad Mathiesen as an opening statement during the Offshore Summit 2021 in DR Koncerthuset.
Brian Vad Mathiesen is a professor of energy planning at Aalborg University. He is the capacity in Denmark in his field. He also has no doubt about what is happening right now with the energy problems in Europe.
- Let's put it like it is. It is not a supply crisis. It is an energy price crisis. It is created by the fact that we do not have enough gas to supply Europe without Russia's gas reserves, says the professor.
Energy efficiency
There is also no way around energy efficiency, the professor believes.
- We must be much better at being much more energy efficient, and then we must invest in the new green energy. The nuclear power plants that are being phased out are partly already obsolete, but there are also some that should run for a longer time, says Brian Vad Mathiesen.
He also has a good reason for why Germany has chosen to source its gas from Russia.
- It is a fact that it is the German industry that has pushed to source the cheaper gas from Russia, he says.
- In Europe, we have chosen not to find other places to source the natural gas because it was more expensive than what Russia could offer, says Brian Vad Mathiesen.
- I hope that we will reduce our natural gas consumption in Europe so that this will not happen again in five years. We are lucky in Denmark. You don't even know the name energy poverty in Denmark, as you do in Europe. There are companies out in Europe that are laying off employees because natural gas has become too expensive, the professor explains.
