Industry's electricity and gas bills are expected to double

The higher electricity and gas prices will cost the industry a total of 18 billion kroner in 2021, calculations show.

It is not only Danish households that will have to pay a higher electricity and gas bill this year. Companies in the industry will also have to pay more than they usually do. This is shown by new calculations from Dansk Industri Energi.

Overall, industry is expected to receive a bill for electricity and gas of DKK 18 billion this year. This will be DKK 9.5 billion more than the most recent normal year 2019. The consumption of electricity and gas will therefore cost more than double for industry this year.

- It is clear that this is something that can be felt all around the companies, says Troels Ranis, industry director at Dansk Industri Energi.

The reason for the higher electricity and gas bill is due to several things. One of the significant reasons is that the global economy has picked up after the first corona lockdowns last year.

This has created an extraordinarily high level of activity in industry and at the same time a high demand for energy. This has coincided with a low supply due to less wind than normal, less rainfall in Norway and a relatively constant supply of gas from Russia.

- This is the basic principle of economics that is being manifested here. High demand and low supply result in higher prices, says Troels Ranis.

The solution is green energy

The industry director expects that companies' higher electricity and gas bills will be felt by consumers in the form of more expensive goods.

- Prices are rising. That is the short message. And that is how it must be when the price of energy rises, because then it also becomes more expensive to produce. And that is of course reflected in the prices of goods, says Troels Ranis.

He cannot say how much or how long consumers will be able to feel the higher prices, as it depends on how long the situation with the higher electricity and gas prices lasts.

One way out of the problem is to increase the use of green energy, says Troels Ranis.

- We need more renewable energy, which can make us less dependent - both on oil and gas and on energy imports.

- It is the only way forward to ensure security of supply, so that we do not get the wild price fluctuations, he says.
