Controversial gas pipeline becomes 409 million kroner more expensive

A significant price increase has hit an already criticized gas pipeline to Lolland and Falster.

The plans for a gas pipeline to Falster and Lolland are becoming significantly more expensive than initially assumed. This is apparent from a statement from Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Dan Jørgensen (S), which the Climate, Energy and Utilities Committee has received, writes TV2 Øst.

409 million kroner in addition to the 1.046 billion the project was most recently estimated to cost. This is the assessment now from Energinet, which is the developer of parts of the 115-kilometer-long gas pipeline.

Today, there is no gas supply on Lolland and Falster, and the gas pipeline is primarily intended to secure a new energy source for the sugar factories in Nakskov and Nykøbing Falster, which currently have to use oil for production.

Originally, the project was estimated to cost 792 million kroner. The increase, which so far amounts to 663 million, does not make the minister waver, however.

- This government stands by the decision to build the gas pipeline. It is an incredibly important decision for Lolland-Falster's business development and the green transition throughout Denmark, says Dan Jørgensen to TV2 Øst.

He points out, among other things, that the gas pipeline also means that biogas plants can be built on Lolland, which will produce more gas than will be used on the island.

- We are going to make a green transition, where we get rid of Putin's gas - it is expensive, one must say - and instead use sustainable biogas, says Dan Jørgensen (S).

Unfair

The Radicals view the project differently in light of the price development. Here is Rasmus Helveg Petersen, chairman of the Climate, Energy and Utilities Committee, now ready to shelve the project.

- It (the gas pipeline, ed.) is more than twice as expensive now as when we in the Folketing were informed about it, and the socio-economic situation in it has always been bad, he tells TV2 ØST and adds:

- I actually think it is quite unfair that society has to pay one and a half billion to a company so that they can continue to pollute.

The adjusted price for the project also includes a reserve of 129 million kroner in the event of unforeseen events and price increases, according to the briefing to the Climate, Energy and Utilities Committee.

The gas pipeline is expected to be completed in 2024.
