The energy group Ørsted refuses to meet Russia's demand that Russian gas be paid for in rubles. The company states this in a press release.
It is the state-owned Russian gas company Gazprom that has sent Ørsted a demand that it be paid in Russian rubles, it appears, but Ørsted has no intention of meeting it.
Ørsted currently has an agreement to buy gas from Gazprom that the company cannot get out of. But the agreement will not be extended when it expires in 2030, the company stated in a press release earlier in March.
The agreement received particularly great interest after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has led to sanctions from the West.
Several parties have since called on Ørsted to withdraw from the contract.
In the press release on Friday evening, the company emphasizes that it "condemns Russia's invasion of Ukraine" and that it has already taken a number of measures to stop cooperation with Russian companies.
- Ørsted has stopped purchasing biomass and coal from Russia for the company's combined heat and power plants, the press release states.
- We are not entering into new contracts with Russian companies, and Ørsted has ensured that none of Ørsted's direct suppliers for the expansion of renewable energy are Russian, it further states.
Ørsted will donate any profit in 2022 after tax and risk hedging from the Gazprom contract to humanitarian aid in Ukraine. This will happen "if the general meeting approves the proposal at the upcoming general meeting in April".
