ESBJERG: Esbjerg will get a new landmark at the port when Kuwaiti artist Monira Al Qadiri inaugurates Ocean Knight, her first permanent public work in Europe, on January 21.
The eight-meter-high monumental sculpture pays tribute to the hidden heroes of the sea and connects Esbjerg's maritime history with a global story about the fragile balance of nature, the municipality informs.
Ocean Knight, which will stand at the entrance to the Port of Esbjerg, is an abstract, enlarged form inspired by a microscopic marine organism, a dinoflagellate. The work pays tribute to the small but vital creatures in the sea such as plankton and algae, which produce the oxygen we breathe and absorb CO2 from the atmosphere.
The sculpture is illuminated from the inside with LED lights like a modern lighthouse in the harbor landscape. The red color is intended to contain both beauty and warning and is a reference to the blood-red sea of the algae bloom and the complex relationships between humans, industry and nature, the municipality informs.
The work was donated by the Esbjerg Foundation and the Johan Hoffmann Foundation and realized in collaboration with the art agency Creator Projects, the Port of Esbjerg and the Municipality of Esbjerg.
