ODENSE / KERTEMINDE: The former Lindøværft in Munkebo north of Odense is today home to lots of high-tech and green industry such as offshore wind turbines, and there are plans for further expansions. But there have been rumblings between Kerteminde Municipality, which houses the area, and Odense, which as owner of the Port of Odense wants the expansions.
In April, Kerteminde's planning and technology committee postponed a local plan that would allow an expansion of Lindø Industripark. The municipality believed that solutions were lacking, including how an expansion would affect traffic, road conditions and settlements.
But now solutions are on the way. The two municipalities and the Port of Odense have today presented a cooperation agreement that will ensure that the future development of the port takes into account three themes, Odense Municipality informs:
- Traffic to and from the port must cause as little impact on the local area as possible.
- Accommodation must be found for the many foreign employees in a way that does not affect the community and village environments in the area. Work must be done to provide education, upskilling and a more permanent workforce.
- In the short term, a better solution must be found for accommodation for the foreign employees. The mayors will enter into dialogue with the government and the Danish Parliament about, for example, employee hotels or employee villages.
The three parties declare that they will, in dialogue with the citizens, create a long-term development plan for Munkebo, so that the development benefits both jobs and the interests of the local area.
Local plan resumed
Kerteminde's mayor, Kasper Ejsing Olesen (S), is satisfied with the agreement.
- The development at Odense Port is unique, and we must hold on to it and build on it. But it must be done in a good way, where we have a balance in things and find common solutions, so that Kerteminde continues to be a scenic municipality that is good to live in. I think we have a clear plan for that now, he says.
The municipality is now resuming work on the local plan. In the future, the three parties will meet every quarter to follow up on the three points.
The port's CEO, Carsten Aa, looks forward to a continued expansion of the area at the port.
- The green transition and the demand for more and larger offshore wind turbines are coming roaring. We must take advantage of this here on Funen, and that is why the development of the Port of Odense is crucially important, he says.
