Green push gave supporting parties agreement on phasing out gas boilers

One billion DKK will ensure a heating check of approximately DKK 3,750 for 320,000 households. DKK 250 million will go towards phasing out gas boilers. This is stated in an agreement reached on Friday between the government, SF, the Danish Social Democrats, the Green Party, the Alternative, the Christian Democrats and the Free Greens.

Several supporting parties believe that it is time for gas boilers to be phased out. They said this immediately after the agreement was reached. SF proposed phasing out natural gas boilers six months ago. But at that time the government was very reserved and was not ready for it. This is according to energy spokesman Signe Munk (SF).

- My experience with the Social Democratic government is that they need good, green pushback. So I would rather have had an agreement to stop new natural gas boilers sooner. But I am very satisfied with the agreement, she says.

The Radical Party said during the negotiations that it was a condition for them that gas boilers should be phased out if they were to support a heat check.

- It is our condition for supporting heating assistance that we stop installing new gas boilers and phase out gas for heating, said energy spokesman Rasmus Helveg Petersen (R).

The Unity Party would have liked to see a much larger agreement than the one reached on Friday. The supporting party wanted 2.7 billion DKK to be spent on heat checks and phasing out gas boilers.

Major savings on support scheme

The state has saved approximately 4.9 billion DKK in support for biogas and offshore wind in 2021 due to high energy prices. But according to the Ministry of Finance, the money cannot simply be taken from the support scheme.

- It's like that with support schemes for renewable energy, some years there is a surplus, and other years there is a deficit. That's what Climate Minister Dan Jørgensen (S) says.

- In 2020 there was a deficit of 6.6 billion. Then there is a surplus this year. And then it goes up somewhat.

But climate rapporteur Søren Egge Rasmusen (EL) believes that it is a question of political will.

- I know the Minister of Finance has other calculation methods. But morally speaking, it is a bit special that the state has saved expenses, while consumers have increasing expenses. This debate will continue. In a little while, the result of the state's finances will come with a large surplus. And then it won't be long before we start a process for next year's finance law, he says.

The money for the agreement will be taken from the so-called "war chest" of approximately nine billion kroner.
