Greenpeace has marked TotalEnergies’ 101st birthday this week with a demonstration in front of the company’s Danish headquarters in Esbjerg. The activists arrived with birthday songs and a symbolic gift: a world map showing areas affected by forest fires and floods in 2023. This is what Greenpeace writes.

– With the map, we wanted to remind TotalEnergies of their responsibility for the climate-induced extreme weather we are experiencing around the world, which has gigantic costs for both people, nature and biodiversity,
says Helene Hagel, climate and environmental policy manager at Greenpeace Denmark.

According to Greenpeace, TotalEnergies is responsible for 80-90 percent of the of oil and gas production in the Danish part of the North Sea and plans to increase production globally in the coming years. The organization emphasizes that the company still derives 95 percent of its energy production from fossil fuels - despite promises of CO?-neutrality by 2050.

Greenpeace also points out that TotalEnergies has been aware of the climate consequences of its business model for more than 50 years, but instead has opposed science and continued investments in oil and gas. In the press release, the organization calls on the Danish government to ban new oil and gas projects and to make companies like TotalEnergies contribute financially to the climate damage.

TotalEnergies has previously told DOI.dk that they had no comments on the visit or the gift from Greenpeace.
