ESBJERG / FREDERIKSHAVN: The government has given the green light to a historic reinforcement of the Danish defense, and now it is clear that part of the billion-dollar investment can benefit Esbjerg. In any case, a new consortium, Danske Flådeskibe K/S, plans to bid for the task of building future frigates and Arctic ships for the Navy in the West Jutland port city. The consortium states this in a press release.
With the support of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S), the Chief of Defense has been sent off with a check for 50 billion. DKK to strengthen the Danish defense. If Danske Flådeskibe K/S has its way, part of the funds will be used to establish a new shipbuilding industry in Esbjerg, where frigates and patrol ships will be designed, equipped and serviced. The project is expected to create hundreds of jobs in the local area.
Danish companies behind the major investmentThe consortium Danske Flådeskibe K/S originated from the former Danske Patruljeskibe K/S and consists of, among others, Terma, Odense Maritime Technology and PensionDanmark. Now the Esbjerg-based engineering and contracting company Semco Maritime, which has so far mainly worked in the offshore industry, is also joining the ownership group, which strengthens the project's maritime expertise.
- It is rare that a task makes as much sense as delivering new ships to the Danish Navy for the benefit of Danish security and Danish jobs. We bring with us experience from the maritime area and complex offshore and infrastructure tasks, and we look forward to ensuring strong cooperation with Danish industrial and service companies across the country in order to meet the ambitions and wishes of the Danish Armed Forces, says Steen Brødbæk, CEO of Semco Maritime.
Nordjylland will build military vessels for the Danish Armed Forces
In January, DK Nyt described that all 11 municipalities in North Jutland and the North Jutland Region will join forces to build military vessels for the Danish Armed Forces.
The background to the initiative is a report from the government and the Maritime Partnership, which concluded last year that 40 billion kroner should be invested in the construction of a new shipyard and 55 naval vessels and warships. North Jutland has ambitions that the shipyard and vessels will be located in Frederikshavn.
According to Per Bach Laursen (V), mayor of Vesthimmerland Municipality, North Jutland has the right skills and a strong network to realize the project.
- North Jutland has the necessary experienced workforce available, and North Jutland's educational institutions are largely aimed at the maritime sector, so that future demands for competent workforce can be met, he says and continues:
- And finally, the Port of Frederikshavn now has the necessary space for additional shipyard facilities, so that new growth can be created at the port and contribute to the plans for establishing Danish shipyard capacity specializing in building, equipping and maintaining naval vessels.
Funen mayors form alliance
Funen has also decided to go all in on military shipbuilding.
Here, all the mayors of Funen have set up an alliance, which includes shipyards and private companies, wrote TV 2 Fyn in November last year.
The alliance is called "Alliance for Building a War Scribe on Funen", and the goal is, among other things, that it, like in Esbjerg, will bring lots of jobs to the local area.
