All 11 municipalities in North Jutland and the North Jutland Region will build military vessels for the Danish Armed Forces. This is stated by Business Region North Denmark in a press release.
Last year, the government and the Maritime Partnership presented a report that concluded that 40 billion DKK should be invested in the construction of both a new shipyard and 55 naval vessels and warships.
If it is up to North Jutland, the shipyard and the vessels will be built and located at the Port of Frederikshavn. Per Bach Laursen (V), mayor of Vesthimmerland Municipality, points out that North Jutland has the right skills and the necessary network to take on the task.
- North Jutland has the necessary experienced workforce available, and North Jutland's educational institutions are largely aimed at the maritime sector, so that future demands for competent workforce can be met, he says.
- And finally, the Port of Frederikshavn now has the necessary space for additional shipyard facilities, so that new growth can be created at the port and contribute to the plans for the establishment of Danish shipyard capacity specializing in building, equipping and maintaining naval vessels, continues Per Bach Laursen.
The port of Frederikshavn has an area of no less than 135,000 square meters of empty land, and it is suitable for the location of a shipyard. Frederikshavn Municipality is in the process of making the area meet the requirements for a shipyard, writes TV 2 Nord.
- We see opportunities to do something here, says Frederikshavn's mayor Karsten Thomsen (S).
It is estimated to cost around 2.4 billion DKK to build a new shipyard with an industrial hall 160 meters long, and the shipyard is expected to employ between 500 and 800 people. A unanimous Economic Committee in Frederikshavn Municipality decided on Wednesday to send a new local plan and municipal plan supplement for the 135,000 m2 area for public consultation.
