Drones flew over Køge Harbor in January: The harbor still has no defense system

The Port of Køge already had a taste of what hit a number of Danish airports last week six months ago. Yet the port still has no defense system.

KØGE: It has been more than nine months since large, mysterious drones were spotted in the air over Køge. This also applied to Køge Harbour, but despite the drone activity, the harbour still has no defence system, writes Radio 4.

This is according to Thomas Elm Kampmann, director of Køge Harbour and 2nd deputy mayor for the Conservative People's Party (C) in Køge.

- The entire Køge Harbour has become a so-called no flight zone. For the entire coming week, Denmark is a no-fly zone, but Køge has been since April, which means that any drone that enters our areas is in principle an uncooperative drone, unless it has been reported.

- The only option we have at the moment is to call the police, says Thomas Elm Kampmann.

It has not yet been determined who was behind the drones in the Port of Køge this winter, but by all accounts they are not civilian drones.

The same report applies to the many incidents of foreign drones that have violated Danish airspace in the past week.

In the wake of the intense drone activity, the government is now presenting a proposal that it should be legal for airport owners to shoot down drones if they are over terminals and runways.

At the port level, however, it will be difficult to comply with the same proposal, says Thomas Elm Kampmann.

- I know that there is a bill on its way through that will enable us to take down drones, and that is of course fine, and we welcome that.

- But I don't imagine that my people will be walking around the quay down here armed. It is clearly on a more national agenda right now, and that is why we are waiting to see what instructions we get from the authorities, says Thomas Elm Kampmann.
