US President Joe Biden says at a press conference in Brussels that the US will deliver 15 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the EU this year to minimize the EU's dependence on Russian gas. Biden says this after a meeting with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
According to the EU Commission, the 15 billion cubic meters of LNG correspond to approximately one third of current imports of Russian natural gas. This is reported by dpa.
Following Russia's attack on Ukraine, the EU has been busy finding other sources so that it can gradually free itself from dependence on Russian natural gas.
- Today we have agreed on a joint plan that aims to achieve that goal, while we step up our work to achieve a secure and clean energy future. This initiative focuses on two core topics. One is to help Europe reduce its dependence on Russian gas as quickly as possible, and secondly to reduce Europe's need for gas in general, says Biden.
Wants more suppliers
Biden and von der Leyen also agreed on a plan for LNG supplies from the United States until 2030. Supplies are to be increased to 50 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas annually during that period. Von der Leyen says that only new energy sources, including LNG, will be the way forward in this situation.
- We as Europeans want to have suppliers that we trust, who are our friends and who are trustworthy, she says.
That means less gas from Russia and more suppliers of energy to the EU. President Biden has participated in meetings in NATO, G7 and the EU in Brussels on Thursday and Friday to find a common Western line against Russia's war in NATO.
On Friday, he will travel to Poland, where he will visit a city close to the border with Ukraine, among other things.
