Vestas drops goal of being climate neutral by 2030

By 2030, Vestas will try to halve its CO2 emissions. Previously, the goal was climate neutrality.

Danish wind turbine giant Vestas has realized that it will not meet its goal of being climate neutral by 2030. Instead, the company will try to halve its CO2 emissions by then. The comparison year is 2019.

This was stated by Lisa Ekstrand, Vestas' head of sustainability, in an email to the media Finans.

The goal of climate neutrality was announced in 2020. At that time, it would be achieved by replacing gasoline cars and trucks with electric cars and by cutting emissions from heating.

But since then, the company has taken over an offshore wind business, which has helped increase its total CO2 emissions. Therefore, according to the head of sustainability, Vestas has concluded that climate neutrality in four years is unrealistic.

Although Vestas makes a living by selling and producing wind turbines that help make the world greener, the company emits thousands of tons of CO2 every year.

Vestas' emissions are related to the fact that wind turbines are made of steel, which is a burden on the climate.

This is not the first time that the Danish company has had to revise its climate targets.

It had set a target for 2025, where emissions were to be cut by 55 percent compared to the level in 2019.

But here too, it had to be realized that it was unrealistic.

According to Lisa Ekstrand, Vestas is currently at a point where it has reduced its CO2 emissions by eight percent, if you include offshore wind business.

If it is excluded, the reduction is instead 44 percent for a period from 2019 to 2024, writes Finans.

- We see an accelerating need to mature sustainable marine fuels. There are activities underway to reduce emissions, but it is taking longer than expected, she tells the media.
