Vattenfall has decided to invest in the two offshore wind farms Nordlicht 1 and 2, with Nordlicht 1 being the largest of its kind in Germany. Construction is expected to start in 2026, and the wind farms are expected to be operational in 2028. Vattenfall writes in a press release.
- The Nordlicht offshore wind cluster marks an important milestone on the path towards fossil-freedom. By accelerating Germany's energy transition and supporting industrial decarbonization, the project will deliver clean and reliable energy while promoting innovation and sustainability in the sector. We look forward to realizing this important project in close cooperation with our supplier partners, says Helene Biström, head of business area wind at Vattenfall.
As part of the agreement, Vattenfall will buy back the shares in the Nordlicht cluster that BASF acquired in 2024. At the same time, BASF has secured access to a long-term supply of renewable electricity to support the company's chemical production in Europe.
The Nordlicht cluster will have a total capacity of over 1.6 GW, of which Nordlicht 1 alone will have a capacity of 980 MW. The wind farms will include towers manufactured with low-emission steel, reducing the CO2 footprint by 16 percent.
The final investment decision for Nordlicht 2 is conditional on obtaining the necessary permits.
