Recently, one of the 110-meter-high offshore wind turbines in Ørsted's offshore wind farm Nysted Havvindmøllepark toppled into the sea south of Lolland. According to DMI data, the wind was not particularly strong when the turbine fell, so it is unlikely to be the cause of the fall, but the cause of the fallen turbine needs to be investigated further, Ørsted told TV2 ØST.
- We get an error message when the turbine disconnects from the power grid. When we go out to sea the next day to troubleshoot, we find that the turbine is in the water. We have not yet had the opportunity to investigate the incident further. It is still windy in the area, and we will only get close to the site when it is safe to sail there, says Tom Christiansen, a communications officer for Ørsted.
Tom Christiansen states that the turbine has collapsed along with its concrete foundation. The foundation is made in a different way than is done today. For example, the turbines in the offshore wind farm stand on large concrete boxes weighing more than 2,000 tons each. Today, turbines are founded via long metal pipes that are driven into the seabed. Tom Christensen does not know when the investigations into the incident will be completed, but expects that it may take "a long time" before the questions are answered.
