VARDE: A data center from which the surplus heat will be used to operate greenhouses, as well as the possibility of building renewable energy to operate the entire facility – energy that could potentially also be used for district heating in the local area.
These things are the main features of a sector-linked project northeast of Ølgod in Varde Municipality, for which the companies atNorth and Wa3rm have applied for permission, Varde Municipality states in a press release, in which Mayor Mads Sørensen (V) expresses enthusiasm for the project, which could create up to 400 new jobs.
- We want to attract a green industry that contributes to development and growth in our local community. This project is a concrete example of the potential of that ambition. This project has the potential to create a significant number of permanent jobs, and concrete considerations have been made about how surplus heat from a data center can be used for development in a completely different industry and a new food production, he says.
The application covers a total area of 174 hectares. The investors have entered into agreements with all landowners within the area in question. Landowners outside the planning area have not yet been contacted.
Still a long way from realization
However, the political treatment of the project is still missing. In week 39, a consultation phase in connection with this will begin, and among other things, a citizens' meeting will be held.
After this, the consultation responses will be processed by the Planning and Technology Committee, and subsequently the city council will process the application and decide whether to initiate an actual planning process with the start of a new local plan and a municipal plan supplement.
- I am pleased that the landowners have experienced a positive dialogue with the companies, and I initially look forward to expanding this dialogue with the rest of the local community and following the project's further progress, says Mads Sørensen.
The expectation is that this municipal decision-making process will run until 2026.
