Siemens Gamesa is preparing to commercialize a new offshore wind turbine called the SG DD-276 with a capacity of 21.5 MW. So far, the wind turbine manufacturer has only referred to the turbine as a "test turbine". But the plan is for the giant turbine, which has so far only been tested as a prototype in Østerild in Denmark, to be commercialized. However, it must first prove to be as reliable as the existing models before it can be introduced commercially. This is reported by Recharge News.
- It is definitely the goal to commercialize that turbine at some point. But we need to be sure that this turbine is as reliable as our existing technology, says Stephan Buller, head of offshore products at Siemens Gamesa.
He emphasizes that the company also needs to ensure that the supply chain and the entire production system can keep up before the turbine can be marketed. The new turbine was the world's most powerful when it was installed in Østerild earlier this year, but has since been surpassed by a Chinese prototype of 26 megawatts. In comparison, Vestas' largest model is capable of 15 megawatts.
