Even more offshore wind turbines will help ensure that Denmark's CO2 emissions in 2030 are 70 percent lower than in 1990. A number of parties and the government agree that an additional two GW of offshore wind should be tendered for establishment before 2031.

This is evident from a partial agreement on the 2022 Finance Act, which was reached on Saturday afternoon between the government, the Socialist Party, the Danish Social Democrats, the Green Party, the Alternative and the Christian Democrats.

Two GW of offshore wind corresponds to the electricity consumption of approximately two million Danish households. At the same time, it has been agreed that the government will be ready with analyses in 2022 that can form the basis for the tender for an additional one gigawatt.

Doesn't it cost the state money

Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen (S) points out that it is now possible to set up offshore wind on terms that do not cost the state money.

- This shows that there is an incredible speed in the development in the green area, both technologically and in the market, he says in a press release.

Recently, it was decided by drawing lots that the German RWE will build the largest offshore wind farm in Denmark to date - Thor Havmøllepark. This is the first time a wind farm in Denmark has been built without the state having to pay for it.

On the contrary, the ministry is budgeting for an income of 2.8 billion DKK for the farm on the west coast of Jutland. Normally, the state has had to pay energy companies to get more green electricity, but this time the money is flowing the other way.

Expecting further reduction in CO2

With the partial agreement, almost DKK 250 million will be allocated for targeted climate and environmental initiatives next year. By 2025, this will amount to DKK 1.3 billion.

The agreement is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an additional 0.5 million tons in 2025. For example, from the capture and storage of CO2.

The parties behind the agreement also agree that ten GW of offshore wind should be established as soon as possible, connected to the energy island that is to be built in the North Sea. This should be with 2040 as the target.

However, the focus in the agreement is not only on offshore wind. There is also agreement on two new marine national parks in Øresund and Lillebælt and a strengthened effort towards drinking water.

The Finance Act is the state's budget for the coming year - in this case 2022. It must be finalized before Christmas.
