The Port of Odense will create the framework for a fivefold increase in offshore wind capacity

The Port of Odense has presented a new vision for the port's development, with the goal of becoming a Northern European hub for offshore wind. The port announced this in a press release.

If the potential in the development plan for the future Port of Odense is realized, the port can in the future fivefold the current production of components for offshore wind turbines and raise capacity from the current one GW to five GW annually.

The plan is to ensure that the Port of Odense will also be attractive in the future for Danish and international companies that produce the vital components for offshore wind turbines. Here, the capacity of the port and infrastructure will be crucial.

Therefore, the port has an ambition for a future expansion, which will add em million. m2 to the port's areas. In addition, the Port of Odense wants to expand the sailing channel to 140 m width and 12 m depth in order to create space for larger vessels.

- An important prerequisite for the positive development we have seen at the Port of Odense over recent years is that we can offer the right framework and facilities. We can see that wind turbines are getting bigger and bigger, more must be produced, and it must go faster. If we are to meet the ambitions for the green transition, the production facilities must keep up, and there is a need for greater capacity and better infrastructure in Danish production ports. This plan is our proposal for how we will solve this at the Port of Odense," says Carsten Aa, CEO, Odense Havn A/S.

Potential for thousands of new jobs

With support from the EU's infrastructure fund, the Port of Odense has invested a double-digit million in extensive preliminary studies of Odense Fjord. The work will map out how a possible port expansion can be planned so that it takes into account nature and the environment in and around Odense Fjord, and at the same time can support the green transition in the best possible way.

- It is a binding task that we solve the dilemma between the requirements for the green transition and consideration for nature and the environment in our immediate area. We will continue to facilitate the green transition here at the Port of Odense, and we will also make a great effort for a gentle and balanced expansion of the port. It must go hand in hand, says Carsten Aa, CEO, Odense Havn A/S.

If the visions for the Port of Odense are implemented, the port could potentially contribute approximately 10,000 jobs in total in the future. It is expected that 6,000 employees will pass through the gates of the old Lindøværft every day, while there will be a further 4,000 derivative jobs.
