The Danish IT company Elbek & Vejrup has launched a new CO2 calculator that enables production and trading companies to document their climate footprint with greater precision. The tool is intended to help companies meet regulatory requirements and create an overview of their total emissions. Elbek & Vejrup writes in a press release.

The calculator can be integrated with the ERP system Dynamics 365 Business Central and allows companies to map their CO2 emissions from both their own production and the supply chain. According to Elbek & Vejrup, the solution meets a growing demand from companies that want to document their environmental responsibility more precisely.

- Most Danish companies will in future have to report their emissions to the authorities, and many are already well underway. However, we have experienced an increasing demand from companies that want to document environmental responsibility in the production stage more precisely. We are now meeting these needs with our new CO2 calculator, says senior consultant at Elbek & Vejrup Ralf Daugbjerg.

EU directive will lead to increased focus

The EU's new sustainability directive CSRD, which comes into force from the 2025 financial year, is expected to increase companies' focus on environmental assessment. According to associate professor Michael Søgaard Jørgensen from Aalborg University, data from CO2 calculations is only useful if companies also actively use them in their strategy and cooperation with suppliers.

- For many companies, a large part of their greenhouse gas emissions lies in the so-called Scope 3 emissions, which cover indirect emissions from the production of, for example, equipment, machinery, vehicles that the company has purchased. Correct use of an environmental assessment is one of the effective means of reducing emissions in this third scope, says Michael Søgaard Jørgensen.

- It is about understanding and using data to, for example, enter into strategic partnerships with subcontractors, so that they implement the necessary climate requirements within a few years. In addition, it is important to look not only at climate impact but also at other types of environmental impact such as resource consumption, continues Michael Søgaard Jørgensen.

Elbek & Vejrup states that the CO2 calculator will be further developed in line with new regulations and legislative requirements.
