Brazilian President Lula is trying to push through a global climate agreement in a sensational diplomatic push as early as Wednesday.

It will be two days before the final deadline at the COP30 climate summit in the Brazilian city of Belém.

It is unusual for state leaders to interfere directly in the final negotiations at climate summits. But on Wednesday, President Lula flew to Belém to hold meetings with all the summit parties – rich and poor.

A statement from the Brazilian delegation reports that the Brazilian host is trying to encapsulate the most essential and at the same time controversial issues in a format that could be adopted on Wednesday – or "midweek".

The effort is particularly focused on creating agreement on a transition away from fossil fuels and on a new target for financing developing countries' climate adaptation.

Denmark ready for a quick agreement

The Danish delegation is following President Lula's efforts with great interest.

Minister for Climate Lars Aagaard (M) met with Lula here as part of his role in the EU presidency, and he is ready for a quick agreement – on conditions.

- We all want that, if it is the right agreement. Fast is only good if it's the right content, he says on Wednesday evening.

However, there is also some skepticism about whether it can succeed as the evening progresses. The host is waiting for a new draft of an agreement, and in Lars Aagaard's view, the fronts are drawn up hard.

- But it's possible that they can land an agreement that is ambitious, he says.

He himself still finds it difficult to see an agreement being reached in the short term. It will require more time, is his experience.

- You only know that on the last day, then. In negotiations like this, all the ketchup comes out of the bottle at the same time, so let's see, says Lars Aagaard.
