Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in Greece on Sunday, where he closed a deal for the supply of natural gas. The news agency AFP writes.

The agreement is intended to support Ukrainian supplies during a winter when Russia is expected to once again go hard to damage Ukrainian infrastructure - including gas supplies.

According to the agreement, the Greek gas company Depa has reached an agreement with Ukrainian Naftogaz to supply American LNG - i.e. liquefied natural gas - to Ukraine from December 2025 to March 2026. The agreement between Ukraine and Greece "marks an important step in strengthening regional energy cooperation and European energy security", according to a joint statement.

The US ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, was present at the meeting where Zelenskyj and Mitsotakis closed the agreement.

Zelenskyj took the opportunity to send a greeting to US President Donald Trump. The Ukrainian president thus expressed his gratitude to Trump for "the fact that we will be able to receive natural gas not only from Greece, but also via Greece", writes AFP.

According to the Greek Prime Minister, Greece is "a natural passage that can be used to allow American liquefied natural gas to replace Russian gas in the region".

Recently, a new gas pipeline in the Adriatic Sea was put into operation. It runs between Greece and Bulgaria and has allowed Greece to send gas to another gas network that includes Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Hungary and Slovakia.

The opening of a new gas depot in the port city of Alexandroupoli in Greece, which receives American liquefied natural gas, has, like the new gas pipeline in the Adriatic Sea, made southeastern Europe less dependent on Russian gas.

The Ukrainian president's last visit to Greece was in 2023. Russia has attacked Ukrainian gas facilities several times since the invasion in February 2022. The most extensive Russian bombing attack to date took place in October.
