The Social Democrats are collapsing completely in their stronghold Frederikshavn Municipality.
The party, which four years ago received over 57 percent of the vote, is losing its absolute majority and, with 26.1 percent of the vote, is now not even the largest party. The Liberal Party has taken over that position with 30.2 percent of the vote, and the party is also taking the mayor's post.
The Social Democratic downturn comes after the vote-getter from 2021 Birgit S. Hansen (S) stepped down as mayor in the fall of 2024, while the case about Frederikshavn Port was ongoing.
Anders Brandt Sørensen (S) was the lead candidate in this election and was supposed to fill the big shoes from Birgit S. Hansen's landslide election four years ago, where she received 40.5 percent of the valid votes in the municipality.
The Liberal Party's Jon Andersen as lead candidate, but it was not without drama that he ended up being so. Jon Andersen (V) has not been a member of the city council and was elected as the Liberal Party's lead candidate after a contested election, where the city council group had otherwise recommended another candidate.
After a long negotiation process, it was the leftist who was able to count on the necessary mandates and thus declare himself the new mayor of Frederikshavn.
Rød lejr calls Jon Andersen "childish" in his negotiations. SF and S were far ahead with the Liberal Party, but suddenly he went to meet with the other bourgeois parties. It writes Kanal Frederikshavn.
Port case costs
At the same time, Anders Brandt Sørensen has suffered from the case about Frederikshavn Port, which has characterized the municipality in recent years.
In the spring of 2024, the municipality took over full responsibility for Frederikshavn Port because the port lacked money to continue operating. The port became a municipal port, and thus the debt, which had grown to 1.7 billion kroner, ended up in the municipal treasury.
Until the port was taken over by the municipality, it was a municipal self-governing port. Frederikshavn Municipality had continuously lent the port more money to get its finances under control.
A study by the law firm Bech-Bruun in February 2025 found no reason to criticize Birgit S. Hansen (S) for her role as mayor in the case, but it has still hurt the party.
