Saudi Arabia and the United States have reached an agreement on strategic cooperation on nuclear energy and the sale of American F-35 fighter jets and tanks to Saudi Arabia, the White House said on its website. The agreement was signed on Tuesday, when US President Donald Trump was visited by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Saudi Arabia has previously requested to buy 48 F-35 fighter jets, but Tuesday's agreement did not specify an exact number. Israeli officials have previously expressed concern about a deal that would ensure Saudi Arabia access to the high-tech fighter jets. On Tuesday, Donald Trump said that Israel agrees that Saudi Arabia will have control of the fighter jets in the future.
Tuesday's agreement also means that Saudi Arabia will purchase almost 300 American tanks, which will help the kingdom build its own defense, the White House writes.
Agreement on nuclear energy and critical minerals
The two leaders also agree on cooperation on nuclear energy. According to the White House, the cooperation ensures that American companies will be Saudi Arabia's preferred partners for decades to come.
The White House does not provide any specific details about the nuclear energy cooperation.
Trump and Mohammed bin Salman have also signed a framework agreement on critical minerals and a memorandum of understanding on artificial intelligence, where Saudi Arabia will have access to American systems.
On Tuesday, the Saudi crown prince announced investments in the United States for more than $1 trillion in the United States - equivalent to 6440 billion kroner.
The crown prince thus exceeded the promise he made to Trump in May during a visit to the Middle East, of investments in the United States of more than $600 billion.
