Former coal-fired power plant to house Europe's largest battery plant

The German energy company Leag Clean Power is planning to build a battery park on the former lignite-fired power plant in Jänschwalde in eastern Germany. The plant will have an output of 1 gigawatt and an energy storage capacity of 4 gigawatt hours, making it Europe's largest of its kind, according to the company.

The project, called Gigabattery Jänschwalde 1000, is part of Leag's Gigawatt Factory initiative, which also includes solar and wind projects and the production of green hydrogen. The location in Jänschwalde marks a significant shift from coal to energy storage. The area was previously home to one of Europe's most climate-damaging power plants, which was then operated by Sweden's Vattenfall. The power plant was closed in 2015 after the World Wildlife Fund identified it as one of the continent's worst climate offenders. This is reported by Ingeniøren.

By building gigantic storage facilities, we are tackling one of the biggest challenges in the energy transition: constant access to energy regardless of the availability of renewable energy. The key to the energy system of the future lies in a combination of renewable energy, storage facilities that can be used when needed, and flexible power plants, says Adi Roesch, CEO of Leag Group, in a statement.

According to Leag, the new battery plant is expected to be completed around 2027-2028.
