Port of Aalborg has now found the contractor for a comprehensive quay expansion at Østhavnen. Munck Havne & Anlæg will build a 500-meter-long quay and 60,000 square meters of quay area, which will, among other things, support Norne Carbon Storage Hub's upcoming CO2 reception facility, which the port recently signed an agreement to house. This is according to Port of Aalborg.
The reception facility will initially have a capacity of 5 million tons of CO2 with the possibility of expansion to 15 million tons. The quay expansion will also enable a significant expansion of the port's commercial areas close to the quay - targeted at, for example, the wind industry.
- The new quay is a prerequisite for us, together with Norne, to realize the CO2 reception facility that will make Aalborg one of Europe's leading areas for CO2 handling, and we are pleased that with the agreement with Munck Havne & Anlæg we are now ready to accelerate the development. At least as important, the quay expansion provides the opportunity to significantly expand our business park and thus to offer many more quayside square meters to the industries – and this applies in particular to the wind industry – that demand it, says Kristian Thulesen Dahl, CEO of Port of Aalborg.
The project is being implemented as a turnkey contract with a collaboration phase according to the Integrated Construction model, where Munck Havne & Anlæg, Port of Aalborg and COWI work closely together on design and risk management.
- We are very much looking forward to the collaboration with Port of Aalborg on a construction project of great strategic and technical importance. With the chosen collaboration model, we have the opportunity to bring our knowledge and experience into play already in the design phase, and this provides the best possible starting point for creating a sustainable and future-proof quay facility, says Patrick Justesen, head of department at Munck Havne & Anlæg.
Construction will begin in the autumn and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The project is supported by the EU with almost 80 million DKK through the CEF program.
