ODENSE / KERTEMINDE: The Port of Odense houses tenants such as Bladt Industries and Vestas, which produce elements for larger and larger wind turbines. The port wants more space and a new 12-meter deep shipping channel, which will make it easier to get large ships in, but researchers warn of the consequences for the marine environment, reports DR Nyheder.

The port is Denmark's largest commercial port measured in area. It was most recently expanded in 2021 by 400,000 square meters. and now has plans for a new expansion of 1,000,000 square meters. The environmental impact report for the project will be prepared during 2024 and issued for public consultation in early 2025, with various permits expected to be issued in mid-2025.

Professor of marine biology at the University of Southern Denmark Erik Kristensen estimates that the expansion will be a disaster for an already stressed fjord if the current plans are implemented. This is a large shallow water area where there is eelgrass and seabirds, which will disappear, and the consequences of the excavation of up to 8 million cubic meters of bottom material will be considerable.
