The work stoppage imposed by the US administration on Norway's Equinor's US offshore wind turbine project Empire Wind in New York has been lifted. Equinor, a Norwegian listed oil and energy company, writes in a press release.

- We appreciate that construction can now resume on Empire Wind, a project that demonstrates our commitment to delivering energy while supporting the local economy and creating jobs, says Anders Opedal, CEO of Equinor, in the press release.

The plan is for Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas to supply wind turbines for the offshore wind farm, which will be the first project of its kind to supply electricity directly to New York City.

The company has received an order for 54 wind turbines with delivery in 2026 and 2027 for the offshore wind farm, which will be located between 25 and 50 kilometers southeast of the island of Long Island. This is the first time that Vestas will deliver offshore wind turbines to the US market. In addition to delivering and commissioning the turbines, Vestas will also service them for the first five years.

Dialogue has worked

US President Donald Trump has been very critical of offshore wind turbines. His administration put the construction of the offshore wind farm on hold on April 16.

However, after dialogue with both authorities and officials at federal, state and municipal levels, the work stoppage has been lifted, Equinor says.

Equinor writes that it expects the offshore wind farm to be commissioned as planned in 2027. It also says that the project is "currently" 30 percent complete. An updated assessment of the project's finances will be carried out in the second quarter, Equinor writes.

Equinor CEO Anders Opedal thanks Trump and New York's Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul, among others, in the press release.

- I am grateful to Governor Hochul for her constructive cooperation with the Trump administration, without which we would not have been able to secure energy for 500,000 households in New York, he writes in the press release.

Thanks are also due to the Norwegian Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, and the country's Finance Minister, Jens Stoltenberg. The latter is thanked for raising the issue with the US government, says Anders Opedal.

Stoltenberg was previously Secretary General of NATO.
