Harsh criticism of Bornholm Energy Island: Based on "wrong assumptions"

The Danish Business Think Tank accuses the government of forcing through an unrealistic project to revive the Bornholm Energy Island.

The Danish Business Council's Think Tank is now heavily criticizing Energiø Bornholm in an interview with Energy Supply.

- We are deeply skeptical. The project is fundamentally on its way to being built at the wrong time, in the wrong place and with the wrong assumptions, says the think tank's acting director and chief economist, Finn Lauritzen, to Energy Supply.

The criticism comes in the wake of the government's revival of the otherwise shelved ambition to build 3 GW of offshore wind off Solkinsøen. A statement from the EU about 4.8 billion support dollars and positive political signals from Germany recently breathed new life into Energiø Bornholm.

But the market is not ready for the project, and there are other ways to achieve the green goals that provide more value for money, believes Finn Lauritzen.

He calls the motive behind Energiø Bornholm "failed" after following the project closely and calculating the economic foundation. At the same time, he directs sharp criticism at the government.

- The ministry has not openly presented the assumptions. There is a lack of transparency. What is the relationship between support needs, project economics and the economy? It has never been explained properly, he says.

It has not been possible for Energy Supply to get a comment from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities.
