There are great political ambitions for offshore wind in Denmark. But in order for the ambitions to be fulfilled, the case processing must take its course. To this end, the Danish Energy Agency has just launched the consultation phase for ideas for the environmental assessment of the plan for offshore wind farms in the areas of North Sea I, Kattegat II and Kriegers Flak II.
Based on input from this phase, environmental assessments of the plans (also known as SMEV) for the areas will be carried out, the agency states in a press release.
"The Danish Energy Agency invites citizens, companies, authorities and others with an interest in the possible future offshore wind turbine areas of North Sea I, Kattegat II and Kriegers Flak II with associated onshore facilities to submit their ideas and suggestions for what should be included in the environmental assessment of the plan for the respective park areas," the press release reads.
After the consultation, the Danish Energy Agency will, among other things, Based on the consultation responses, decide which topics and environmental impacts should be highlighted in the environmental assessment of the plans for North Sea I and Kattegat II/Kriegers Flak II, respectively. After the environmental assessment of the plans, an environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the specific projects on both land and sea will still have to be carried out.
The consultation will run from Monday, March 6 to Friday, March 31, 2023. The results of these environmental assessments are expected to be presented in the second public consultation in the first half of 2024.

Facts about the offshore wind areas:
- North Sea I consists of an area of approx. 2,210 km2 in the Danish EEZ of the North Sea. The results of these environmental assessments are expected to be presented in the 2nd public consultation in the first half of 2024. The environmental assessment of the plan for North Sea I highlights the possible environmental impact of a number of offshore wind turbines corresponding to between five and 17.5 GW in the entire area. The capacity of the offshore wind farms depends on the final tender framework and the concession winner's specific project and is expected to be tendered in several phases. All turbines will be planned at least 20 km from the coast.
- Kattegat IIconsists of an area of approximately 122 km2 in the Danish EEZ of the Kattegat. The environmental assessment of the plan for Kattegat II highlights the possible environmental impact of a number of offshore wind turbines corresponding to between one and 2.46 GW in the entire area. The offshore wind turbines will be located in the Kattegat approx. 27 km from Anholt, approx. 15 km from Djursland and approx. 25 km from the coast in Odsherred Municipality, Northwest Zealand. A potential offshore wind farm is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2030 at the latest.
- Kriegers Flak II consists of an area of approximately 173 km2 in the Danish EEZ of the Baltic Sea. The environmental assessment of the plan for Kriegers Flak II highlights the possible environmental impact of a number of offshore wind turbines corresponding to between One and 3.45 GW in the entire area. The capacity of the offshore wind farm depends on the final tender framework and the specific project of the concession winner. Offshore wind turbines in the northern part of Kriegers Flak II will have to be located approximately 15 km from Rødvig in East Zealand and approximately 15 km from Møn. Offshore wind turbines in the southern part of Kriegers Flak II will have to be located approximately 15 km from Møn.
- For all projects it is also important that the environmental assessment of the plan highlights at an overall level the possibility of establishing adjacent innovation facilities, including PtX facilities in connection with the offshore wind farm.
