Denmark has signed a new joint declaration for the development of offshore wind in the Baltic Sea. In addition to Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland and Sweden have also signed the intention to cooperate on the development of wind energy in the Baltic Sea.
- The offshore wind of the future is regional, wrote Marie Hindhede, head of department at the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, on Twitter in connection with the agreement.
In its proposal for its energy island in the Baltic Sea, the Danish government has planned for the island to be connected to neighboring countries, so that the entire region can benefit from the green energy.
But Poland also has big plans in the Baltic Sea, where the government has recently announced plans to start looking towards offshore wind energy and wants to set up up to 11 GW of wind energy by 2040.
Estonia and Latvia have also already shown the way for regional cooperation, where the two Baltic countries have already signed a memorandum of understanding on a joint 1 GW offshore wind farm.
A study of the Baltic Sea last year mapped out that the Baltic Sea could potentially accommodate up to 93 GW of wind energy, but to get there, strong regional cooperation is necessary, for which the first drawings are now being drawn up.
- It is a perfect example of how you can go further by working together, and it underlines what we can achieve. I hope that we can continue this long tradition of cooperation, because the way forward requires important steps, where cooperation is key, says Estonian European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson.
The EU Commission has also signed the declaration, while Norway is participating in the project as an observer.
“We need to stick together” said my German colleague when we signed the declaration on cooperation on #offshorewind in the Baltic Sea with Poland's @KurtykaMichal and many more. So true! The offshore wind of the future is regional. ???????????????? #dkgreen #POWC2020 https://t.co/0Wy0jEAMXK
