The two Baltic neighboring countries Estonia and Latvia have signed a memorandum of understanding in which they jointly want to build an offshore wind farm of up to 1 GW in the Gulf of Riga in the Baltic Sea.
Together, the two Baltic countries will carry out the necessary feasibility studies, after which the offshore wind farm will later be put out to tender.
The Baltics have so far focused on onshore wind, with Lithuania and Estonia covering 12 and nine percent respectively of their electricity consumption from wind energy last year. However, Estonia in particular has now turned its attention offshore, where a number of projects are underway.
