Broad agreement implements Nekst recommendations - The goal is faster expansion of the electricity grid

A broad compromise in the Danish Parliament is behind an agreement that aims to ensure faster processes and that the electricity grid is placed on an equal footing with other public infrastructure projects. Recommendations from the Nekst working group are being implemented.

If the green transition in Denmark is not to lose momentum, there is a need for a strong electricity grid, which must therefore be expanded on a large scale. Specifically, it is estimated that 2,700 km of new electricity grid is needed by 2030, and a further 3-4,000 km of electricity grid by 2050 if Denmark is to be able to keep up.

To ensure easier bureaucracy for the many thousands of kilometers of electricity grid, a broad agreement has been reached in the Folketing. Here, the government, with the support of the Socialist People's Party, Liberal Alliance, Conservative People's Party, Unity List, Danish People's Party and Radical Left, has agreed to ensure a faster expansion of the electricity grid, so that, among other things, wind turbines, solar cells and new electricity consumption can be connected more quickly. And so we have an electricity grid that covers the need and that can tie the green transition together - from production to consumption The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities in a press release.

- With this absolutely necessary agreement, we are giving extra speed to the expansion of the Danish electricity grid, which has reached its limit in several places today. We are removing barriers and creating greater capacity for more green electricity. Because we want a greener Denmark, where we replace oil, coal and gas with green electricity, and that requires more electricity grid. Now we are ensuring a faster and more efficient expansion of our electricity grid, so that we are ready for a society with more electric cars, green fuels and a greener industry, says Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M).

Implementation of Nekst recommendations

The agreement has, among other things, focus on implementing several of the partial recommendations that the NEKST working group on faster expansion of the electricity grid issued earlier this year. This means, among other things, that electricity infrastructure will be put on an equal footing with other infrastructure projects such as gas, road and rail infrastructure when it comes to uniform rules and practices for expropriation.

The agreement also contains measures for strengthened civil rights - including that particularly affected citizens who are to be expropriated can have the expropriation brought forward if they wish. At the same time, citizens close to new electricity projects will have uniform access to appeal options.

- It is not logical that it should be more difficult to build a transformer station than a motorway. The implementation of the NEKST recommendations will both shorten the time it takes to expand our necessary electricity grid - and provide faster clarification to the particularly affected citizens. As it is today, they could risk waiting for years for clarification. With the agreement, citizens can get up to three years of faster certainty when building on their land, says Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard.

The agreement also accelerates the expansion of the electricity grid. This is done by designating the first three so-called acceleration areas for electricity infrastructure.

Follow-up to the Nekst working group's partial recommendations:

The parties to the agreement agree that:

  • Equalize opportunities for expropriation for electricity transmission projects, so that they correspond to other public infrastructure projects.
  • Ensure faster clarification for particularly affected citizens and uniform access to complaints for neighbors.
  • Ensure legal basis for expropriation to ensure early compensation.
  • Introduce attention zones for the distribution network's larger transformer stations (main stations).

Acceleration areas:

The acceleration areas will form the basis for Energinet's three largest upcoming projects for the expansion of the electricity transmission network. These projects cross several municipalities and include significant sections with, among other things, new high-voltage pylons and transformer stations. In addition, the electricity grid will be laid underground in parts or entire areas as cables.

The first three acceleration areas are:

  1. New Grid Structure for North Jutland
  2. New Electricity Grid Aarhus-Aabenraa
  3. New Electricity Grid South Zealand, Lolland & Falster Stage 2.

For the first project - New Grid Structure for North Jutland - the Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities has already approved Energinet's § 4 application to initiate the establishment on November 4, and the reinforced electricity grid is expected to be in operation in 2031.
