The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has spoken by phone with the Prime Minister of China, Li Qiang, about the need for strong trade cooperation and a responsible response to increased US tariffs. This was stated by von der Leyen in a statement according to Reuters. In the conversation, Ursula von der Leyen has stressed the need to de-escalate the ongoing trade war between the United States and the rest of the world.
Von der Leyen has emphasized Europe's and China's "responsibility to support a strong, reformed trading system that is free, fair and based on a level playing field," the statement states. Ursula von der Leyen and Li Qiang also discussed the possibility of creating a system that can monitor the effects of increased tariffs on the market.
The conversation between the President of the Commission and the Prime Minister of China takes place in the wake of US President Donald Trump's announcement of increased tariffs on foreign goods.
5. On April 1, a basic tariff of ten percent came into effect, and from April 9, varying tariffs will be imposed on goods from a wide range of trading partners. For example, from April 9, the United States will impose a 34 percent tariff on goods imported into the US market from China.
China has responded with a 34 percent tariff on American goods. The increased Chinese tariff will come into effect on April 10.
At a press conference on Monday, Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU has offered the US an agreement on zero tariffs on cars and industrial products if the US will remove tariffs on corresponding European goods imported into the US.
- Europe is ready to negotiate with the US. We have offered zero-to-zero tariffs on industrial goods. Because we are always ready for a good deal.
- But we are also ready to respond with countermeasures. And protect ourselves from indirect effects through trade diversion, said von der Leyen.
