The Swedish government will permanently lower the electricity tax.

This is what four representatives of the government write in a debate article in Aftonbladet.

This applies to Energy Minister Ebba Busch, Finance Minister Elisabet Svantesson, Education and Integration Minister Simona Mohamsson and Oscar Sjöstedt, who is the economic spokesman for the Sweden Democrats, which is the government's support party.

They are announcing a reduction of almost 10 øre. The current electricity tax in Sweden is just under 55 øre, equivalent to 37 øre in Danish prices.

The reduction in the tax is intended to give the Swedes some breathing space in their budget, and it is also intended to help push for the green transition, the debate article says.

- In order to manage the climate transition, it is also crucial that we succeed in electrifying the transport sector. More cars and trucks should run on electricity.

At the end of August, the Danish government also launched a reduction in the electricity tax from the current 72.2 øre to the EU's minimum tax of 0.8 øre.

However, the reduction will only apply in 2026 and 2027.

Here the argument was that the Danes would be given more money in their hands in light of rising food prices. The government's calculations estimate that a single cash benefit recipient living in an apartment will save 1000 kroner per year.

A retired couple living in a house will save 2675 kroner per year, while a working-class family living in a house can look forward to saving 3975 kroner on their electricity bill annually.

In Sweden, rising food prices have also been on the agenda, where the government, in collaboration with the Sweden Democrats, last week lowered the VAT on food from 12 to 6 percent.

- We will ensure that more money comes into the wallet, said Sweden's Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, at a press conference.

The halving of the VAT will apply from April 2026.
