Municipalities will have a common system to measure and monitor their climate initiatives

The common system must make the best possible knowledge available to municipalities, which can benefit from sharing experiences.

For the first time, a joint monitoring system is now being established for all municipalities, which will measure and follow the municipalities' climate efforts and their effects. The joint system will make knowledge and experiences available so that the municipalities can learn from each other, according to the philanthropic association Realdania.

The system is being launched by the Climate Alliance, which is a partnership between KL and Realdania - with the think tank Concito and the global network C40 Cities as knowledge partners.

The joint system will make the best possible knowledge available and document the effects of the municipalities' efforts.

It will identify barriers, ensure the collection of experience and knowledge sharing, and provide relevant decision support to municipalities that can form the basis for corrective action locally, as formulated.

What has worked in municipality A? And what has not worked in municipality B - and why?

- The knowledge that the municipalities collectively bring to the table must be utilized and used. The new monitoring system means that they can be inspired by each other across municipalities. Especially now that the municipalities are in the process of translating the ambitious plans into concrete action, says Nina Kovsted Helk, CEO of Realdania, which in 2019 took the initiative for the DK2020 initiative in close collaboration with C40 Cities and Concito.

- It is not an easy task, but we know that by working together, sharing knowledge and learning from each other, municipalities can go even further than they could alone, she adds.

Municipal climate efforts

In a previous report mentioned in DK Nyt, Concito called for new planning tools, access to data and a massive increase in skills in connection with the establishment of the new monitoring system.

In connection with the establishment of the new monitoring system, a new report from Concito provides an initial assessment of the climate efforts of all Danish municipalities. The report documents the status and progress of the municipalities' climate action plans and efforts.

Although greenhouse gas emissions have overall decreased by approximately 20 percent from 2018–2022, none of the municipalities have yet reached their target.

The municipalities have in their plans a total of over 6,500 initiatives to mitigate and adapt to climate change within, for example, energy, transport, agriculture and land use, which are typically the sectors that make up the most in the municipalities' climate accounts.

This first status report is the starting point for future monitoring, and the ambition is that the system will be developed over time. Under the auspices of the Climate Alliance, a status report on the municipalities' climate action will be published annually.
