The European Commission has published its proposal for a 2040 climate target on Wednesday. The proposal includes a proposal to reduce CO2 emissions by 90 percent by 2040, setting the course for a greener Europe. The proposal is good, "but on the unambitious side", says Green Power Denmark.

- It is extremely important that significant political pressure is put on European companies and consumers to replace oil and gas with green electricity. A 90 percent reduction in CO2 by 2040 is a necessary step on the road to full climate neutrality by 2050, says Ole Rydahl Svensson, head of public affairs, EU and press at Green Power Denmark.

The organization particularly criticizes the Commission's proposal that countries can partially buy climate credits abroad as a way to achieve the goal. The initiative is not met with praise from Green Power Denmark.

- It is a proposal that belongs to a time when it was cheaper to invest in reductions in the poorer parts of the world. What we need is a real green transition of Europe. We must invest in power cables, wind turbines, solar cells and in a crucial electrification of consumption, says Ole Rydahl Svensson.

Green Power Denmark emphasizes that the climate target can contribute to lower energy prices, strengthened competitiveness and increased energy security. The organization also points out that the Danish EU presidency will have a key role in ensuring that the target is translated into concrete action and real investments in green energy.

- It will be up to the Danish presidency to lead the negotiations on the upcoming climate target. There is no doubt that it will be a big and difficult task. But it is also one of the most important tasks we face in Europe, says Ole Rydahl Svensson.
