Mayor: Bornholm's concerns about lack of benefits from energy island have been heard

A new agreement between the government parties calls for four ministries to enter into dialogue with Bornholm about possible local gains in connection with the establishment of the Bornholm energy island. This pleases Bornholm's Mayor Jacob Trøst (C).

Local support for the Bornholm Energy Island could falter if Bornholm is not taken into account. The mayor of Bornholm has toured with this view several times.

In a request to the Danish Energy Agency, the municipality had requested that, for example, the winner of the offshore wind turbine tender should make a social contribution to the local community. However, that request was rejected, and this worried the mayor.

After the Government and a broad majority in the Danish Parliament this week entered into a new agreement that provides for more favorable conditions for business development and compensation for the construction of larger energy parks on land, as well as more compensation for neighbors for solar cells and wind turbines, Jacob Trøst is looking more optimistic about things.

According to the mayor, the agreement gives hope that the favorable conditions for establishment and local compensation that have been agreed for energy parks with renewable energy on land will also apply to Bornholm in connection with Energiø Bornholm.

Trøst has repeatedly argued Bornholm's case to Christiansborg, and this is now reflected in the government's agreement. The agreement contains an independent section that proposes that as many as four ministries; the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, the Ministry of Urban Affairs, Land and Church Affairs, the Ministry of Business and Industry and the Ministry of the Environment should enter into dialogue with Bornholm about the possibilities for local gains in connection with the land facility.

- It is no secret that I have been beating the drum in the Danish Parliament for Energiø Bornholm to be included in the framework for energy parks. Partly because Energiø Bornholm contains many of the same potentials for local development and growth as renewable energy on land. Partly because it is only fair that neighbours and local communities on Bornholm also share in the benefits of expanding renewable energy. That is why I am naturally pleased, and that with the agreement we have received a promise that the government will enter into dialogue with the municipality about a special scheme for Bornholm based on the terms agreed for Energy Parks, says Jacob Trøst in a press release.

In the spring of 2024, the government will present a new law on larger energy parks based on the agreement that was concluded this week.

- From the start, we have wanted a constructive dialogue about how Energy Island Bornholm can also be a success locally, and I look forward to continuing that dialogue with the four ministries. But I will only be completely satisfied when there is a concrete agreement for Bornholm that provides a fair distribution of burdens and benefits for both neighbors and local communities - and which at the same time supports positive business development, says the mayor.
