Løkke: The ties between Denmark and the USA have been tested before
The relationship between Denmark and the United States has been tense in recent months, but this is not the first time that there has been friction between the two countries.
This is what Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) emphasizes in his speech at this year's Rebildfest, which marks American Independence Day on July 4th every year.
The celebration takes place in Rebild Bakker, located in North Jutland, and is organized by the Danish-American Friendship Association.
- The bond between the United States and Denmark extends through generations. It has lasted through generations. And it has been tested through generations, says Lars Løkke Rasmussen in his speech.
He mentions Iceland's secession from Denmark in 1944, which the United States supported, the Vietnam War, which the Danish government called a failure, and the footnote policy in the 1980s.
Today, the relationship between Denmark and the United States was tested again.
US President Donald Trump has for several months expressed a desire to buy Greenland. And he has threatened most countries in the world with imposing punitive tariffs on their goods.
That is why Lars Løkke Rasmussen also believes that it is natural for some of those present at the Rebildfest to be concerned.
- I have also thought about it, but I am hopeful. Because human relationships endure - regardless of the disagreements. You, who are here today, are proof of that, he says.
