Medical clinic fined millions for leaking Shakira's medical records
A medical clinic in Peru that treated Colombian pop star Shakira for a stomach ailment in February has been fined.
Local health authorities in Peru announced this on Wednesday, according to the AFP news agency.
The reason is that the pop star's medical records were leaked after the treatment at the clinic.
The 48-year-old pop star canceled a concert in the Peruvian capital, Lima, in February. The concert was part of her world tour "Las mujeres ya no Lloran" (Women Don't Cry Anymore, ed.).
The reason for the cancellation was stomach pain as a result of an unspecified stomach ailment that had to be treated at the Dalgado Auna medical clinic in Lima.
Shortly after Shakira was hospitalized, her medical records began to appear on social media.
It caused outrage among her fans, and an investigation into the leak was launched.
The medical clinic stated at the time that it was investigating what it called a serious ethical violation of the clinic's code of conduct and rules for processing personal data.
The local health authorities in Peru have fined the medical clinic for the leak. The fine is $190,000 - which is equivalent to 1.2 million Danish kroner.
"Las mujeres ya no Lloran" is Shakira's first world tour in seven years. The tour is still ongoing and shares the name with her latest album, which was released in 2024.
The album deals with Shakira's highly controversial breakup with Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué in 2022.
Shakira's career began when she was 13 years old. Here she released the album "Magia. In 2001 she had her international breakthrough with the album "Laundry Service".
Since then, it has become a series of hits for the Colombian singer, who is behind songs such as "Hips Don't Lie", "Whenever, Wherever" and "Waka Waka".
