In the spring of 2024, the municipalities of Norddjurs and Syddjurs initiated a joint process to clarify options for a biogas plant on Djursland, and after an application period in which there was a dialogue with three parties, which ended on January 3, it is now clear that one application has been received. The municipalities announced this in a press release.

The application comes from Brdr. Thorsen Biogas in collaboration with Kosan Gas and NRGi Renewables. The three partners point to a location at Lyngdal south of Homå in Norddjurs Municipality, and the plant, which the applicants have named Energiklynge Djursland, will consist of a biogas plant, wind turbines and solar cells and will also provide the opportunity to connect the new energy sources to district heating and Power-to-X.

The biogas plant must be able to handle up to 800,000 tons of biomass per year, according to the application, which also contains proposals for six wind turbines and approximately 200 hectares of solar cell plants in the area around the biogas plant. According to the application, the proposed project will be able to produce up to 350,000 MWh per year.

- It is an ambitious application that we are submitting, and we are happy about that. Together with Syddjurs Municipality, we have a great desire to strengthen the energy infrastructure and contribute to the green transition in Djursland, and both of these aspects are reflected in the application we have received, says Kasper Bjerregaard (V), who is the mayor of Norddjurs Municipality.

The same tone is echoed by his colleague in Syddjurs Municipality Michael Stegger (S).

- We share the desire to contribute to the green transition with Norddjurs Municipality, so we are very happy about the collaboration we have on establishing a biogas plant on Djursland. Even though the plant will be located in Norddjurs, it will still be of great importance to us in Syddjurs, with less than 10 kilometers to the municipal border, so we share the joy of the application that has been submitted, he says.

There is a long way to go before politicians can make the final decision on the construction of the entire plant. Several rounds of consultation with citizens and an environmental assessment as well as several extensive studies await. According to the schedule, it will not be until mid-2027 that the municipal council can finally give its yes or no to the project.
